yo, i ain't seeing you in a minute, but i got something to tell ya, listen. 3.30 不只是未来主义的悲剧 未来主义Futurism是20世纪初兴起的一个现代艺术流派,与传统艺术最大的区别是,未来主义讴歌城市、工业、机器、斗争与行动,相信革命的价值,对战争破坏旧社会结构的意义十分推崇。它的绘画与摄影表现城市生活的动荡与不安,它的音乐表现自然与工业的噪音,它的建筑艺术表现出对城市中心、高度与密集社区的推崇,有非常强的动感与主观印象性。
在那个时代,未来主义显得很与众不同,但是很吻合当时社会中的革命时尚,包括布尔什维克与法西斯主义的主张。未来主义自己也吸引了一批欧洲的激进的艺术家与知识分子,并且提出了自己先是国际主义后是民族主义的政治主张。未来主义的头号人物、意大利艺术家马里尼提先是各种革命潮流的同情者,后来逐渐沦为墨索里尼的同盟军。马里尼提本人出任墨索里尼政府的政治职位并一反自己反学术的立场任职于墨索里尼的国家文化学院。得力于墨索里尼的支持,当时的未来主义政治主张与马里尼提相当风光了几天;得力于马里尼提的支持,墨索里尼确立了自己的文化体系与在意大利知识界中的特殊影响。有意思的是,在法西斯的政治框架下,即使作为政治盟友,马里尼提也没有太多的行动自由,并且逐渐被墨索里尼打入冷宫,而马里尼提本人则执迷不悟,追随墨氏至死。但是即使马里尼提及其为代表的未来主义政治主张一起走向了坟墓,我们还是看得到未来主义的艺术主张是现代社会城市化与深度工业文明的反应,表明了现代化发展的建设性与强有力的破坏性之间的关系,有相当的前瞻性,后来的当代绘画摄影、音乐与城市设计的发展证明了未来主义者的某些先见。 但包括马里尼提在内的一代未来主义先辈在与墨索里尼的联盟中被埋葬的悲剧,很大程度上说明了艺术家的政治幼稚以及艺术在与政治联姻交易中的宿命——政治不可能是受艺术驱使的工具,而政治本身则有很强的驱使艺术的冲动、能力与目的。看到马里尼提,我就想到很多文革前后的中国文学艺术人物,他们与马里尼提的命运和结局是如此相似。我深深地觉得,一个国家要珍视自己的艺术资源与传统,需要在政治上给予艺术、艺术流派与艺术家以适当的自由创作的空间,甚至有时允许他们冲撞到意识形态的规则;而艺术家则需投入艺术、投入社会,但要与政治生活保持适当的距离。值得欣慰的是,今天当代艺术与民间艺术的发展的民间性、自由性有所增强,我期望这样的发展趋向可以不断得到加强。 本日场景:阴冷的北京,继续小咳,不过心情是好的。早上见美国国务院、财政部、使馆客人。下午看了电影《史前一万年》。晚上与戴维斯教授等朋友餐叙。 3.29 信用是一种行动技术 我们在人际交往中很重视信用,通常信用是指我们过去的履行承诺的正面记录,不过我在这里说的是一种行动技术,是一种人人可以尝试与自我管理的行为管理模式。平时我们交往各种各样的人,很多人早上一起来以后就到菜市场买菜去,我偶尔也去买菜,我问大妈说那个黄瓜多少钱一斤啊?五毛钱一斤?来两斤。我说大妈我今天没带钱,黄瓜赊着吧,大妈说不行。为什么?我跟她不认识,我们是偶尔进行的短期交易,所以在这个中间不存在信用。在另外一些情况下会有信用,比如我们社区里面的其他的大妈,她天天早上准时到黄瓜摊报到,人家摆了五年黄瓜摊她买了五年黄瓜,两个大妈像姐俩似的,原因是她的历史记录中总是给了钱拿黄瓜,偶尔有一两回没拿钱,先拿黄瓜,历史数据证明她也很有信用。
但是如果我先给大妈100块钱,而黄瓜只要两块钱,我说你把那98块钱存着,下回我到你这再买,每次扣,扣到最后的时候,没了我再拿钱,这就是一种制造信用的技术——先行投入技术,就是在一种长期交往关系中,你先投进去,你先做到你的努力。我在某大学讲授管理课程,大学里面有一个风气是互相请吃饭,一般来说,都是同学请教授吃饭,这天经地义。上MBA课,同学们都有一点心意,请老师吃饭很正常,而我是请同学吃饭的。这班上同学就在想这个老师请我们吃饭当然好啊。这就叫做先行投入,我请同学吃饭在前,而且我是教同学的,如果他们请我大家心安理得的,但是我请他们吃饭不太正常,因为我不欠他们什么。所以当我请完吃饭以后,同学当中产生有一种感觉就是社会债务心理。我拥有的是社会债权心理,社会地位是你拥有的社会债权心理的总和。我们经常在做生意的时候提到一个消费者忠诚度,这个消费者忠诚度比消费者满意度还要好,消费者满意度是说如果一个厂家卖给我一个茶杯摔到水泥地上不会破,我会满意。为什么呢?我在想这个茶杯到底是什么东西做的呢?我用榔头敲会不会碎呢?不会碎,我想这个茶杯太牛了不是一般的茶杯,那它简直就是一个文物啊,觉得这个厂家太厉害了,超过了我对它的期望。当人们得到一个东西超过他的期望的时候,人们会产生负债心理,当人们产生负债心理的时候会有一些行为表现,比如说他坚决用你的东西;比如说他过去用一次,但是他现在要用两次才感觉对得起你;我不只自己用,我介绍其他人也用你的。这就是说,当人们心里面对你有负债感的时候,他会努力寻找一些代偿措施来回馈你。 我现在请同学们吃完饭我想得到什么呢?如果想得到的是轮流做庄,我会去跟同学们说你们记住啊,袁老师等着你们请回来哦。但是你想想看,其实我先请同学吃饭,他们请我吃回来,换一个时间段吃饭,所以其实我是没赚的。赚什么?这就涉及到第二个技术,叫做转移支付技术。我曾经翻译过一本书《魅力赢天下》,这个书中间介绍了一个现象,说很多学校里面同学给老师评价的好的分数,不绝对的跟这个老师的教学水平高有关,是跟喜欢这个老师有关。所以同学们转移支付给我第一个东西是给我教育考评分很高。然后还有一些同学觉得我这个老师不错,积极劝说单位领导与我的公司做生意。这是转移得到的第二个资源。我这里要强调的是我们应该寻求得到的回报,不是原来的同类回报。其实我们每个人都拥有不同的资源,有的时候甚至一个普通的打工妹也有,其实打工妹在你们家里面做家政小时工可以做得更好一点也可以做得更差一点,关键在于她内心怎么看。所以每个人都拥有他的资源,每个人跟其他人的交往方式中,最典型的回报方式是把自己拥有的资源折价给你,所以我们应该尽量用资源交换,不要简单用原来的形式等价、等偿相同方式的回馈,所以这种转移支付的形式使我们获得了资源差价,所以你按照市场价的话是盈利的。 如果你有先行投入的意识,即使你帮助过的大多数人没有回馈你,只有小部分人有回馈,也说明你这个先行投入是有价值的,而且回报也往往能达到你的预期。你们想想很多人看到在一个单位里面人会互相扯皮,其实如果有这样的先行投入意识,单位的文化会是多么积极,遇到什么事首先想到先做。如果大家在交往中八个人一起吃饭,八个人都争着买单的话那是多好的形式啊。信用技术可能在开始的时候带有某种牺牲的意味,但是在社会资本发展中是最有价值的,也是我们社会交往的基本技术。 本日场景:神采奕奕地走在首都机场新航站楼。走前雨到达雨,够滋润,就是冷。晚在北京与美国来的朋友聚餐。通常回来很少有时差。 3/28/2008 3.27 我的两岁的博客 2006年3月我开始写作我的博客,到现在每天都写,几乎没有耽误,包括所有的周末与节假日。我的博文基本上一天隔一天,提供一个比较私人的话题与一个比较公共的话题。其中以一年半的博文为主,由上海三联书店出版了我的随笔集《绝对神经》,这本书也满足了不上网看博的朋友的需要,很多朋友很喜欢那本书,因为他们可以在旅行中看,而且往往一两天就可以看完,我甚至发现我因此而形成了一种“博文体”——800-1000字左右,一个核心,一些感慨,而且是一种接近于口语与书面语之间的文体。在这种博文体形成的过程中,我的每天写作习惯也基本稳定,每天花30分钟写作对我来说已经是一种很轻松的行动——一篇文章、一幅照片、一段场景、一首小诗与一个自制的菜单。当然也非常感谢那些陪伴我的博客的博友,你们的阅读与评论,让我不感寂寞,有压力更有动力。
在这里我要说几句话:首先非常抱歉我不能给所有的朋友的评论回应,但是我基本阅读了大家的评论,而且有一些朋友我已经非常“熟悉”,有的人喜欢表扬、有的人喜欢同情、有的人喜欢“拍砖”、有的人喜欢掀起点议题,有这样不同的角色,才构成了一个活生生的社区,而不是一个单一的语言空间;其次我提供的任何信息不可能完善与完美了任何话题与语言形式,大家大可以把这里得到的信息与灵感看作一种刺激,你可能另有主张、可能有更深入的思考、可能有更奇妙的表达,那么请行动,请博客,让我学习,让我们更多的博友得到受益的机会;再次,正如我一再强调的那样,任何一种习惯坚持成了行为就不会成为负担,而且也轻易不会丢弃,曾经有博友说等待有一天我写不去的时候,很抱歉让你失望了,因为那种挑战主要来自于你自己没有形成这样习惯,而有不写的习惯;最后,我是用我的真情实感表达我的感慨与情感,我想我愿意与朋友们分享的是作为一个真实的普通人,对于生活观察、个人感受转变成表达内容时的我的个人风格,我不挑战任何其他人的表达风格的是非,而且我也看淡其他朋友对我的风格的说长道短,说到底我有我的生活、思维、考虑,我们可以在一起分享,但我们也各自独立。在一个社区中,我想最值得倡导的是平等交流、诚恳待人、干净说话、尊重彼此——听从自己内在的来自良心的声音,尊重别人真诚的意见。 我的博中间的每一篇文章中的每一个字都是我亲自写的。我不偷懒,我也不偷取别人的智慧与光荣。有人怀疑我用了写手来帮助写作,其实用脑子想想就知道,要有这样的思想与认识水平的写手他怎么还会沦落到给我捉笔的程度。在我旅行、等待、开会、坐车的过程中,我有很多的时间可以写作博客,写作加强了我的审核与修改专业咨询报告的能力、使我可以顺便完成我的多个专栏的任务、向我的同事与朋友们沟通我的想法、使我更加敏感与深刻地体会到我观察到的很多事物,我享受博客的写作,也享受博客作为一种社交工具所发挥的作用。 在我的眼里,这个世界的一切——人、花草、树木、山石、海浪、风云、雨雪都充满生动的灵韵,甚至可对话的素质。我喜欢这个变化而丰富的世界,所以它们在我的心目中有言之不尽的材料。我非常感谢有一些朋友喜欢我,肯定我,鼓励我,批评我,期待我,但我谢绝来自网络空间的情感表达与言情,我不希望在评论与留言中看到这样的信息,因为你在博中间看到了我的一些真实元素但那还不是我的全部,也不大可能是你以为的那个我,我可能会在诗歌中与天地间很多客体以情对话,但是与此同时我心也已有所属,至少有我明确所指的对象。我也是一个普通而平凡的男人,我在自己的博客空间里或悲或喜,或爱或恨,或痴或癫,那是我一种表达、渲泄与平衡的方式——我得当博客是我的一个真实的表达工具,正如你的是你的表达工具一样,我不希望有一些朋友自作多情,也不希望一些朋友给我困扰。在这里就是简单、朴素、长远与单一的博友关系,只要我还开张,欢迎你来坐坐,只要你也开张我也争取去坐坐,就如同我们曾经有的那种街坊邻里的友爱关系,我们就是虚拟空间中淡如清水的街坊与朋友关系。未来的日子里,我会继续坚持我的博客建设成为一个学习价值更高的社区,也衷心感谢那些热情支持的朋友,我们一起加油,一起变得更聪明长进一点——学习会让我们知道,与我们的今天比我们的昨天比较蠢一点;与我们的明天比我们的今天也是蛮蠢的。 本日场景:今天的讨论集中在中印的全球政策与改进全球化中的研究方法。晚上是来自中印的国际学者的招待晚会。
3.26 教授大半都挺惨 我们有一些教授在场面上很热闹,比如北大的张维迎、清华的张卫平、复旦的张军、北京理工大学的杨东平、北京农业大学的陈章良等,这些热闹的教授为中国高校的教授群体缔造了新的社会形象,但是在热闹背后我们要知道教授群体其实并不都有他们风光。根据我与教授们打交道的经验,我把他们大致分为以下几个群体:
一是有学问有热闹的,这些教授是所谓名教授,也是富教授,因为他们出场费高,社会知名度大,现在也为各种的社会机构与社交场所所看重,但是他们实际占到我看到的教授群体的总量1-2%都不到。能把学问热闹很好平衡,还为社会认可,代表着学术界的不同寻常的水平与能力。热闹有的时候很重要,这无论对于个人创收与为学校筹资都非常重要。 二是有学问无热闹的教授,这些教授往往在某个领域多少有所造诣,在专业圈子有一定认同,也能拿得出很不错的科研成果,但社会知名度小,收入比较固定,而且往往中间不少人还不善言辞(在他们的训练里面沟通是最大的弱项或者从无训练),在现在学生普遍浮躁的心态之下,很多学生甚至因为他们讲课没有趣味而看不太起这些教授。在理工农医与语言历史这类学问领域还有不少这样的教授,占到我所知的教授群体的不超过30%。 三是有热闹而无学问的教授,这些教授的口才不错,也比较大胆敢说,顶着大学教授的头衔,在娱乐化与噱头化的新闻界也颇有市场,因为只要你敢找他他就敢给你要的有意思的说法,尽管他们的说法往往让学术圈的同行摇头,但他们博得的社会影响却比摇头者大。当然也有一些爱出头,但并不为观众喜欢而成为“票房毒药”的教授,但是他们病态地喜欢在媒体上露头,这些教授占我所知教授的4-5%。 四是既无学问也无热闹的教授,这些教授没有才华,没有专业热情,没有特殊的研究特长,没有口才,没有表现的能力,因为阴差阳错的原因成了教授,他们是照本宣科者、抄书写书者、例行公事者,很多还是莫名其妙者。同行不知、学生不喜,这样的教授在我认识的教授中是主流,在半数以上。 五是现在出现了一个新群体,他们往往是有热闹的官员、企业家与社会知名人士,然后他们被聘为了兼职教授或者客座教授,其中有一些人有点行动经验也有名头,而另外有一些人则主要是有热闹的名头。他们在我所知的教授中占5%。 现今的大学,如果自己的教授里面有5%有热闹有学问,有40%有学问无热闹,有5%有热闹有点学问的兼职教授,我想就已经是相当好的学校了。可惜的是,我们现在大多数的大学,似乎是以无学问无热闹的教授群体为主流,而在已经以这些教授为主流的大学里面,就产生了很强的“劣币驱逐良币”的效应,能容得下的是更没学问与更没热闹的教授,那对于这些学校的教授来说是悲哀的,而对于这些学校的学生来说就更悲哀。 本日场景:今天听一期中印交流项目成员的汇报。面很宽,集中不少信息,挺有意思。 3.25 交朋友的11个小技巧 交朋友有很多方法,我们有很多人也自觉不自觉地有很多交朋友的技巧,有些人甚至有交往朋友的原则。但是很多人是用朴素的方法与人交往,或者不自觉地运用或者不运用一些技巧。这里我和大家分享的11个小技巧,供大家社交参考。
——聊天聊点长远的事。我们一般与人在一起聊天的时候,除了鸡毛蒜皮,家长里短的事情之外,我们要让人觉得有一点远见,有在考虑未来的事情,自己是一个可以有长期交往价值的人。让人感到你是有长远考虑的人才增加人们与你建立鸡毛蒜皮以外关系的空间。 ——交往一些眼前无用的人。有地位有资源的人谁都想去交往,但是在人家眼里你可能都不算一根葱。那些从还看不出谁长谁短的时代发展的同学关系却在后来成为了很长久的社会支撑。我们要把一部分精力放在帮助这些现在没有很多功用的人,从而为未来积累真正的价值。实际上那些只交往有用朋友的人看起来更象小人。 ——注意社交的差异性。有的人说我从没有公务员的朋友,或者从来没有教授的朋友,没有做投资股票这些方面的朋友,那么我要有意识的去这些人可能较多出现的场合、讲座、活动中去交往这些朋友。假如我要交往一个投资界的朋友的话,说不定在投资讲座的时候可以交到这个人。 ——不要随便给人家承诺。如果承诺的话是指100%可以做到的,你可以不承诺,可能面子上抹不开。我有一个规矩第一我不借人钱,亲戚朋友只有一个例外,你们生了大病我都会帮助的,我承诺做到的都能做到,我说不借的就不借。清晰的承诺可以减少你的麻烦,也可以让其他人知道怎么和你打交道。 ——接近不知道或不喜欢的知识或人士。在这个不知道里面,你可能会发现这些人事其实才是我非常喜欢的。有时你还要接触一些不喜欢的人和知识——中学,高中包括到大学是我们人生最开放的时候,一个很重要的原因,是中小学到大学的时候我们学到很多知识是不得不学的。等到我们工作以后,老得快的一个重要原因是因为只选择自己喜欢的东西,从而变得十分偏执。所以如果你选10本书,你选三本你不喜欢的书,七本是你喜欢的。如果你能这样坚持,你将对未来保持开放心态。 ——在没事的时候联络老朋友。大家打招呼,说有事来找我,而社交的规矩是没事情的时候找人才能积累情感与彼此的粘合度,有事找人是用人,没事找人是情感投资。我们要更多在没有事情的时候给人电话、吃饭、聚会与旅行。 ——做成本低但让人感觉到你的关心的事。过中秋买三千块钱的月饼,这个不见得有必要,而今天这个时代还能手写信,所以你过一个节给你30个朋友一人写一个小短信的话,比你那个肉麻的印的卡片要好。所以你哪怕用最朴素的方法报告一下你的情况,也比转一个人家已经收到过的定制短信好。 ——组织聚会扩大关系。一家人老公有老公的朋友,太太有太太的朋友,小孩子有小孩子的朋友,如果大家的朋友带朋友一起聚会,就可以把社交关系扩大很多倍,而且还发展了与家人可共享的友谊关系,增加了共同的话题,也在有事情的时候制造了可以与大家都说得上话的人力资源。 ——关心自己给人的第一形象。现在大家不像以往,交往机会多了,但其实人们很难有第二次交往,大部分人连一次见面的机会都不会有,我们在超级市场推着一个货车,选东西的时候很多东西不认真看的,顺手这么一拿,扫一眼就可以判断,而我们现在人际社交中间很多不是扫一眼就可以判断的。所以为什么像我们面试啊,会议啊,论坛啊,你要认真的考虑我的形象怎么样?第一要吸引人们的注意力,第二个人们对我的注意力是正面的。要充分注意形象的修饰。 ——一定要用名片。人初次见面后需有一个沟通的链接,名片就充当这样一个作用。假如今天是龙永图在这边做演讲,你说龙先生我们能不能换一个名片,他会说不好意思我今天没有带名片,这是他的亏欠,因为他没有给你名片。大家在名片上也不要印手机号,你在他面前写下了一个号码,你写这个东西的姿态表明你对他另眼相看。 ——与朋友一起做公益。我们这些朋友我们除了互相帮忙之外,很重要一点就是把我们的友谊和关系用在帮助第三人和第四人方面。在这一种交往中间因为你帮助了他们,所以新的得到帮助的人对你还是负有社会债务的,更重要的是使得我们能够体验到那种帮助其他人,服务于其他人,为更多人创造价值这个中间的乐趣。还不会减少原来的友情。

![]() 3/22/2008 3.22 爱情也是美丽的交易 可能有人看到我这个题目就要骂我,“真不是个东西,做生意做昏头了,什么都是交易,那交易的最多就是肮脏的肉体生意,断然称不上爱情的。”以前思想解放一个很重要的针对的对象就是买卖婚姻,是不是这样的交易论就是为那样可耻的行为做合理化证明呢?社会关系交易论来自一个西方社会学家布劳,他主张,其实我们交往的社会关系都是一种交换关系或者是一种交易关系,而且人们还会在交易关系中追求平衡,也就是不希望进行的是不划算的交易。
大家知道交易就是做生意的意思,一手交钱一手交货,一分价钱一分货,两分价钱两分货。交易追求对称与平衡。你要想名牌吗?你要付出比非名牌更多的钱,你要住五星级宾馆要付2000块钱,而如家就只要240块钱,这就是交易的特点。在我们普通的社会关系中间,我们批评某人把爱情演变成了赤裸裸的交易,这是贬义的,但是爱情也许本来也是交易,不过呢,它有一个是跟一般的商业交易不一样,它不明码标价。没有人说谁要跟我谈恋爱,我这个人值18万5千块钱,如果有,那也是拐卖人口的时候,那个是属于非法的。但爱情是有交易的,不过这个交易的模式跟正常的交易不大一样,而它也是有平衡性的。比如说两个人相爱,海誓山盟,到有一天一个人突然出了状况了,他不爱了,而爱上了另外一个人,那么另一个人就恨这个人,为什么呢?本来是对称的,我爱你你也爱我,现在我爱了你但没有得到爱,他不平衡了,因此转化成恨了。 你到美国去的时候跟很多美国人吃饭特别不自然,美国朋友说晚上我们去吃饭吧,要在中国意味着请我吃饭,他不是,他是说让我们坐在一起吃饭,没有说我帮你买单。这个很正常,大部分情况下与老美坐在一起吃都是AA制的。假定有的时候我们中国人给老美说一起吃饭吧,我的意思是请他吃饭,然后我要买单的时候他很不自然,他会想今天他给我买单他想干么呢?等到下一次我又喊他吃饭他都不敢去了。你能不能得出一个结论,中国人是不搞AA制的,美国人才搞AA制呢?其实中国人也搞AA制,但叫做纵向AA制,就是轮流做庄模式,比如我们班上有八个同学,今天我打头我买单了,买完单以后,下次比如有一个同学说上次老袁买单,这次我来买单,再下次有一个女同学说上次男同学买单,这次我来买单。我会觉得我们班上的业余生活很健康,为什么?大家很自觉地都知道轮流做庄的意思,不论纵向还是横向的AA制都是一种简单交易的模式。 母爱不交易吗?母爱通常是最无私的,小时候生这个孩子,养这个孩子,一把鼻涕一把泪的,可能真没想将来我可以从这个孩子身上得多少钱。但你的儿子大学毕业了,儿子跟妈说现在我长大成人了,我也自立了,我也找到工作了,现在我们解除母子关系,我一个人在外面爱上外国上外国,爱上月球就上月球,爱上哪上哪,你要真的做了太绝你妈真起诉你,说这孩子从小我一把鼻涕一把泪把他养大,现在变成这样。做一个正常的孩子你要有回报的心理,这是天经地义的。要不回报我就认为你出了问题了,法律认为你也出问题了,社会也认为你出问题了,因为你违反了社会交易的规则,母子之间也是一个纵向AA制,当初娘养你今天你孝敬娘。我们要明白这一点以后,我们才会知道,为什么我们要维护社会资本,维护社会交往你不能老占便宜,你也不能老付出,虽然说我们也鼓励学雷锋,我们也鼓励大公无私,但是大部分人不是这样的,一般的人要心理平衡,你能够长期可持续的帮助其他人,你总是期望以某种形式获得平衡,虽然不见得要你完全用同样的方式来付出,而你自己始终要知道你不能亏待其他人,正因为你有这样的想法,你会在总体上使得你整个社会资本能保持平衡。问题是怎么样能够展开这种交换关系,或者展开一种比较富有活力的,健康的交换关系。 不管爱情也好,母爱也好,友谊也好,虽然在本质上是交易的,但是一种隐性的交易,人们普遍不愿意被说破,如果你说成是交易,很多人会感到不舒服,感到你不纯洁,认为你太庸俗了。所以这种社会交易规则与很多社会知识一样是一种潜规则,很多时候不这样做人们会不满意,但是你要这样说出来人们也不满意,做得说不得。今天我这样说了,也许又会有人不喜欢。也不希望大家都喜欢,只希望大家当作一家之言,思考一下就不错了。 (3月8日我在上海图书馆所做的市民讲座节选) 本日场景:今天有金黄的阳光,但风大。接着开会,我们讨论中印交流北京十一月会议流程。与印度的两位学者讨论我们合著新书《中国这边印度那边》的计划。交流项目成员今天讨论合作项目。

Act Your Dreams With Open Eyes

The only way to win the confidence of Starbucks' employees was to be honest with them, to share my plans and excitement with them, and then to follow through and keep my word, delivering exactly what I promised- if not more. No one would follow me until I showed them with my own actions that my promises were not empty.
I had written just a few points down on a 5-by-7 note card, to remember as I addressed the group.
They were:
1. Speak from my heart
2. Put myself in their shoes.
3. Share the Big Dream with them.
Defying conventional wisdom, achieving against the odds, offers a thrill that's hard to top.
But my view of a successful business wasn't just measured in number of stores. I wanted to create a brand name respected for the best in coffee and a well-run company admired for its corporate responsibility. I wanted to elevate the enterprise to a higher standard, to make our people proud of working for a company that cared for them and gave back to their community.
To attain that ideal, we needed create a business that valued its people, that inspired them, that shared its rewards with those who worked with us to create long-term value.
Instead of a small dream, I dreamed big.
If you want to build a great enterprise, you have to have the courage to dream great dreams. If you dream small dreams, you may succeed in building something small. For many people, that is enough. But if you want to achieve widespread impact and lasting value, be bold.
Who wants dream that's near-fetched.
Chapter 8
If It Captures Your Imagination, It Will Captivate Others.

For me, the thrill of business is in the climb. Everything we try to achieve is like climbing a steep slope, one that very few people have managed to scale. The more difficult the climb, the more gratifying the effort put into the ascent and the greater the satisfaction upon reaching the summit. But like all dedicated mountain climbers, we're always seeking a higher peak.
Germany's beer gardens, England's pubs, and French and Viennese Cafes created this outlet in people's lives, providing a neutral ground where all are equal and conversation is the main activity.
That's why our expansion-gutsy as it was- succeeded even better than we imagined.
Big opportunities lie in the creation of something new. But that innovation has to be relevant and inspiring, or it will burst into color and fade away as quickly as fireworks.
Chapter 9
People Are Not A Line Item
Wealth is the means and people are the ends. All our material riches will avail us little if we do not use them to expend the opportunities of our people. -JOHN F. KENNEDY, STATE OF THE UNION, JANUARY 1962
I saw my plan not as a generous optional benefit but as a core strategy: Treat people like family, and they will be loyal and give their all. Stand by people, and they will stand by you. It's the oldest formula in business, one that is second nature to many family run firms. Yes by the late 1980s, it seemed to be forgotten.
If you treat your employees as interchangeable cogs in a wheel, they will view you with the same affection.
But they're not cogs. Every one of them is an individual who needs both a sense of self-worth and the financial means to provide for personal and family needs.
In bussiness, that passion comes form ownership, trust, and loyalty. If you undermine any of those, employees will view their work as just another job.
But I know, in my heart, if we treat people as a line item under expenses, we're not living up to our goals and our values.
Their passion and devotion is our number-one competitive advantage. Lose it, and we've lost the game.
Chapter 10
A Hundred- Story Building First Needs A Strong Foundation

If you aspire to fast growth, you need to create an infrastructure for the larger enterprise you are planning to create.
You can't build a hundred-story skyscraper on a foundation designed for a two story house.
When companies fail, or fail to grow, it's almost always because they don't invest in the people, the systems, and the processes they need.
Huge investments upfront mean not only potential annual losses but also a dilution of the founder's shareholding.
You can't create a world-class enterprise without investing in it. In a growth compny, you can't play catch-up. But you also can't just excuse losses in the early stage of the business without examining each expenditure. Growth covers up a lot of mistakes, and you have to be honest about what's right and what's wrong about your operations.
Sometimes, in life as in business, you know exactly what you need to accomplish your goals and you have to go out to look for it.
To any entrepreneur, I would offer this advice: Once you've figured our what you want to do, find someone who has done it before. Find not just talented executives but even more experienced entrepreneurs and businesspeople who can guide you. They know where to look for the mines in the minefield. If they have thought and acted boldly in their own careers, and proven successful, they can help you do the same. If they share your values and aspirations,and if they freely share their counsel, they can help you through rough patches and celebrate your victories as their own.
That's the kind of mentor I never had as a kid or as a young adult. If one doesn't find you, beat the bushes till you find one who will take you on. And with the right mentor, don't be afraid to expose your vulnerabilities. Admit you don't know what you don't know. When you acknowledge your weaknesses and ask for advice, you'll be surprise how much others will help.
Chapter 11
Don't Be Threatened By People Smarter Than You

Products are inert. You have to hire great people, you urged us, celebrate their passions and their skills, and give them the freedom to do their jobs right. "We're not filling bellies," he likes to say. "We're filling souls."
Without romance and vision, a bussiness has no soul, no spirit to motivate its people to achieve something great. But a successful company can't sustain itself on exhilarating ideas alone. Many business visionaries have failed as leaders because they could not execute. Processes and systems, discipline and efficiency are needed to create a foundation before creative ideas can be implemented and entreneurial vision can be realized.
To be success ful, every business needs to achieve a balance between the two forces. And that requires leaders who both understand the vision and know how to put in place the infrastructures needed to realize it.

As you're growing a business, you never know the long-term implications of decisions you make.
Today, when I look back on the years before we went public, 1987 to 1992, I call them " the imprinting years." Like parents struggling to raise a child, Dave and I, Howard Behar, and Orin Smith broutht our values to the workplace and tried to figure our how to apply them even as the company was moving and changing by the day. What I tried to do was honor the individuals around me, let them paint colors and make mistakes without telling them they were wrong. We struggled during that early part of the journey, as we do today, and we made mistakes. But we also forged a team and a mission and built the confidence that we could, indeed, reinvent the coffee experience in America and build a worldwide brand.

He was an attorney, merchant, publisher, and author, as well as an occultist and an American pioneer of New Thought, which is in fact the title of a magazine he edited at one time. He is also known to have been the author of the pseudonymous works attributed to Theron Q. Dumont and Yogi Ramacharaka. Atkinson's 1906 book Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World,[1] is associated with the thinking behind the recent phenomena surrounding the 2006 movie, The Secret. Due in part to his intense personal secrecy and extensive use of pseudonyms, he is now largely forgotten, despite having obtained mention in past editions of Who's Who in America, Religious Leaders of America, and several similar publications -- and having written more than 100 books in the last 30 years of his life.

3/10/2008 A School for FailuresThe "miracles" in bussiness do not just " happen". He knows that the only way they will happen is by sticking to a proposition and seeing it through. That is the only secret of why some succed and others fail.
It is my opinion that wiht the right kind of traning every man could be a success. It is really a shame that so many men and women, rich in ability and talent, are allowed to go to waste.
The man with grit and will, may be poor today and wealthy in a few years; will power is a better asset than money; Will will carry you over chasms of failure, if you but give it the chance.
Do not expect that you will always have easy sailing. Parts of your journey are likely to be rough. Don't let the rough places put you out of commission. Keep on with the journey. Never sit down and complan of the rough places, but think how nice the pleasant streches were. View with delight the smooth plains that are in front of you. There is Good in All ThingsOne of the most beneficial practices I know of is that of looking for the good in, for there is good in all things. We encourage a person by seeing his good qualities and we also help ourselves by looking for them. We gain their good wishes, a most valuable asset sometimes. We get back what we give out .
Life furnish us the opportunity to improve. But whether we do it or not depends upon now near we live up to what is expected of us.
Every time that we fall behind what we planned to do, we lost just so much for that time is gone forever. We may find a reason for doing it, but most excuses are poor substitutes for action. Most things are possible. Ours may be a hard task, but the harder the task, the greater the reward. It is difficult things that really develop us, anything that requires only a small effort, utilizes very few of our faculties, andyields a scanty harvest of achievement.
I know that every man that is willing to pay the price can be success. The price is not in money, but in effort. The first essential quality for success is the desire to do- to be something. The next thing is to learn how to do it; the next to carry it into execution.
The secret of success is to try always to improve yourself no matter where you are or what your position.
